All About Kindergarten

Ready Set Grow, a Long Island Pre-school, located in New Hyde Park New York, has been helping children transition into school for many years.

The history of kindergarten dates back as far as the eighteenth century where children were put together to sing, dance, draw and socially interact. These practices were created to ease the transition from home to school. The first reported kindergarten institutions were in Bavaria and Strasbourg. Kindergarten not only helped the children transition but also helped the parents who had to go to work.

The term kindergarten was coined by Friedrich Fröbel after he started a play and activity institution in 1837. Friedrich’s approach played a major role in many institutions around the world. Friedrich based his practices on the belief all children have individual needs and capabilities.

The first United States kindergarten class was founded in 1856 by Margarethe Schurz in Wisconsin. The first kindergarten class only spoke German. Elizabeth Peabody an American educator followed the trend and opened the first english speaking class in 1860. Up until the 1930’s kindergartens practices were influenced by Fröebel. Eventually in the United States the curriculum started leaning more toward Italian educator Maria Montessori. Since the 1980’s kindergarten shifted way from child centered education and more toward preparing students for first grade. As the years progressed more and more states created Kindergarten programs in public and private schools. Mississippi was one of the last states to integrate kindergarten into public schools.

Today there are five states that don’t make Kindergarten compulsory. New York is one of the five states, allowing Kindergarten to be optional and out of all districts, only 22 offer both full and half day programs. Kindergarten is an important part of growing up and socially interacting with children your age. Most Long Island schools have children enter into Kindergarten full time making a need for pre-kindergarten necessary. At Ready Set Grow of Nassau County, Long Island, we help children prepare for elementary school and get themselves comfortable with interacting with other children. Busy parents makes it hard for them to schedule play dates and child interaction time. We understand time is not always on your side and thats exactly why we help children establish skills necessary to have fun and learn while mommy and daddy work hard.
